You know an athlete has reached a rarified level of celebrity when his or her romances - real or rumored - start making news.
Or when they have to put out a press release to announce the end of a relationship. Which is what Rory McIlroy did on Monday. McIlroy's management team at International Sports Management released a statement on Monday:
"Rory McIlroy's long-time relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship."
And did McIlroy split up with Sweeney because he has a hot new romance with someone else - someone else who is also a major sports star? McIlroy was seen in London Sunday evening out with the world's No. 1-ranked tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki.
According to the Yahoo! Sports tennis blog Busted Racquet, McIlroy and Wozniacki shared dinner ... and - gasp! - a kiss!
McIlroy and Sweeney's breakup is a bit of a surprise because it was just a few weeks ago that McIlroy was talking about how he "begged" Sweeney to take him back. The two had been together since their mid-teens, but took a "break" earlier this year. Then Rory, in his own words, "begged" for reconciliation.
Now his management team issues a statement about the second McIlroy-Sweeney breakup. Yep, Rory is playing in the big leagues now.
If McIlroy and Wozniacki are now - or later become - boyfriend-girlfriend, good for them. They won't be the first golf-tennis couple:
- Greg Norman and Chris Evert were married for about 18 months;
- Adam Scott and the former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic dated for a couple years;
- Hank Kuehne and Venus Williams were together for a few years, beginning in 2006;
- Sergio Garcia and Martina Hingis dated in 2002;
- and back in the 1970s, Sandra Haynie and Martina Navratilova were together for a couple years.
Any other golf-tennis couplings you can think of?
